Make Money While Waiting for a Tow Truck...

Yesterday was one of those days. It started out calm enough. We had purchased my wife a used toy car to drive around to and from work. We love our Lincoln Navigator, lovingly called the Lincoln "Valdez" in reference to its 4 valve per cylinder high output V-8 premium fuel gas guzzler performance. It is a beaut & comfortable, but with our gas prices soaring we picked up a new little buzz bomb Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo. Yup, it still burns premium but should burn about half as much. AND it should be a lot more fun on a daily basis.

Well I had been piddling with the Eclipse & fixing a few minor things for fun. Then I took it to go pick up my wife for lunch. So far so good. After lunch well let's just say that things went to hell in a handbasket. After following an old lady for a while who was definitely in the sloooooow mode I punched it to go around the old lady. The turbo kicked in & all hell broke loose. We zipped around her in nothing flat & just as it hit the rev limiter ....nothing....she just died.

Coast over to the side of the road. Back it up off the road & call AAA for a tow. Three lies from AAA about ETA & 2 1/2 hours later we are loading it up on the tow truck.

Finally...

We had to take it to two different mechanic shops before I found one that could get to it in my lifetime.

We had owned the car less than 48 hours & it was already in the shop. I had "broken" HER new toy and now she had to walk the remaining block to work. No joy for papa!

But here (finally) is the ending of this story. I got back to the house and was plenty PO'ed as you can imagine. I popped the top off a beer & sat down at the computer. I really hadn't had hardly any time to look at it for 3 days.

Wouldn't ya know. Those three days had sales for me that were better than most other days for the last month! I seriously had to laugh...and the beer hadn't even kicked in yet. :)

THAT my friend is the eye popper about working on the internet with passive sales income. You can be gone on vacation, working on the car, going to the doctor, mowing the yard or broke down at the side of the road and still make money because you don't have to be there or even KNOW what is going on except every so often. Sure it depends on your business model. Some PPC activities have to be watched virtually daily. And yes I know you should probably PAY someone to work on the car so you can go design your life but sometimes I find working on the car is FUN and afterall I AM paying someone else to work on the car now, aren't I? :)

Twitter is a storm on the horizon. I have really just awakened to the whole Twitter thang. So what the heck IS Twitter? Well...that is hard to explain.

Right now you are looking at a blog. Think of Twitter like a mini-blog. People can "follow" you. You can "follow" them. You can see what they write and they can see what you write. These are little short notes of 140 characters or less. It is kinda like instant messanger too. Hey, you can find well known people to follow and guess what, much of the time they follow you!

The idea is everyone can get to know everyone else better. Naturally, I have gravitated toward the internet marketing crowd or people who are following the internet marketing crowd. You can follow John Reese, Joel Comm, Brad Fallon, and a multitude of others. Sometimes the Twittering (Tweets) turns to Americal Idol or "off to dinner".

This is really cool. Today I stumbled into a new Web 2.0 style website that is gonna explode.

What is it? It is a website that has a Google PR4 at the time of this writing that allows you to link to your websites for one thing!

Another thing is it allows you to put articles on the website, or just little snippets of information they call intel. (No not the chip maker.) This allows you to associate certain information to your websites as well.

You can review other peoples intel & earn $$ that are used on the website. To boot you can put money making intel on the site & you get to keep 100% of the profits!

Rex Jumps In With Both Feet!

I just realized that while I sent the announcement out to my in-house list, I never posted my plans to my blog. You see 2008 is going to be a very big year for me and my loved ones.

But first let me digress... and hang on to yer hat as this is a LONGGG post but I promise it will be worth it.

I’m not selling anything today…but there is a HUGE lesson here…if you are ready for it. This lesson COULD be a turning point in your life too…if you let it be.

So turn back the clock to the early 70s. (WOW! That’s a lot of rewinding!)

In college, my hair was down past my shoulders. Yup I was one of THOSE. I played guitar in a rock band in Norman, Oklahoma. I was "supposed" to be getting a college education in physics, psychology & electrical engineering. Oh, I was getting an education alright. I was working 20 hours per week at a Target store in Norman to PAY for college, going to school by day & playing guitar & drinking beer until 2AM. It's a good thing we didn't get more gigs or I would have crashed & burned!

Then my first epiphany happened…

I distinctly remember leaving an after party one night at about 2 AM. Our band had a good night. The crowd was screaming for us to play more. I was feeling almost famous and I had $8 & all the beer I could drink for free. What else could a college student ask for right??? The rhythm guitar player & I had to walk back to campus from the party because the lead singer (who had the car) drove off. He left us because he picked up a cute girl at the party. Bastard!

We laughed all the way back to campus. We were miles from campus which gave us a lot of time to reflect. We both knew this wasn’t our future. We were not where we wanted. We had really big choices to make. $8 & all the beer you could drink on the one hand versus a secure career as an engineer waiting for me if only I would knuckle down & get to work. You gotta realize that for a college kid this choice is not as obvious as it is now. LOL.

I was never quite the same after that. I love music to this day & have played in multiple bands since then. That was for fun. But I never deluded myself to think that I should gamble my secure career away for trying to become a “ROCK STAR”. So with renewed enthusiasm I completed my degree.

Fast forward over 30 years…..zzzzzzz……..The short version…

I designed scoreboard electronics, worked on military electronics, designed fish locators, Loran navigation receivers, and finally what has consumed the last 20 years of my life…GPS receivers. I was promoted VERY rapidly until I became the engineering manager of the GPS group. I was the manager for over 20 years. I have designed GPS products for boats, handheld units, aviation units & automotive turn by turn navigation units. I even have a patent issued from one of the GPS designs. It was a good job. It was fun because I loved the technology & the people I worked with.

Then one day, the owner of the company decided to sell the company that I had known for many years. They decided they didn’t need to invest more in the future of GPS.

WHAM! After 30 years at my job I was laid off & put on the streets.

IS THIS A PROBLEM? Not, really! This is a HUGE opportunity for me!

Then I got my SECOND EPIPHANY.

My alleged “security” of my engineering degree and spending 30 years at one company provided me with absolutely NO security at the end of the day. Sure, I had a good run with decent pay and benefits. I’m not complaining even one little bit. The company has been good to me.

But REAL security was in me and my own abilities. It was time to move on.

I have not been stagnant over my career. I have ALWAYS continued to learn. My home office has 5 bookshelves simply CRAMMED with books, 3 ring binders, DVDs and software. I have at least 7 computers on the home network. I am up to date on the latest design techniques in surface mount electronics and PCB (printed circuit board) layouts. However, I am ALSO up to date on internet marketing.

I could go get another job. I have not even the slightest, teensiest doubt in my mind. My design skills are marketable. But I choose NOT to pursue them.

Why??? I have already told you I love engineering.

The answers are found in my dreams and goals...

• You don’t get wealthy working at a JOB.
• You don’t get wealthy trading TIME for MONEY.
• I can’t get as much personal satisfaction executing decisions I know in my heart are wrong when I can be making my own decisions as an entrepreneur.
• I have dreams & goals that can never be met while working at a day job.
• Equally important my wife’s goals can’t either.

So as of January 1, 2008 I have gone full time into internet marketing!

Honestly I can’t believe it has taken me this long to DECIDE to do this. This is a decision my wife & I made together. My wife and I decided that my passion these days was on the internet anyway. I had been selling products online since 2005. But I only got to do that in the evenings. Even so I was having pretty good success.

So come along on the ride. No, that doesn’t mean for you to go quit your job tomorrow. Don’t get ahead of yourself. You could PLAN to quit your job. It also, means keep an eye out here as I share my stories, plans & results. You will also see products recommended that I am using to further my business.

So where are those lessons that I promised you?
You may have already figured some of it out.

1. Playing rock guitar for all the beer you can drink is not a good bet!
2. A long distinguished career even in an industry does NOT truly offer security in today’s world.
3. Keep learning. Never stop. Maybe, learn more than just ONE thing in life. Imagine if you only worked on record players and never learned about CDs or DVD players. Very dim future.
4. Be prepared for the future. That means SAVE MONEY. Don’t spend every dime you have. I would be sweating it if I didn’t prepare.
5. Make life changing decisions with your spouse as they are in this with you & you need their support. If you don’t you are a moron!
6. Believe in yourself. Go for your dreams. Follow your heart. Most of your worries in life are between your ears, caused by your or never happen.

So why the internet? Hello? Do you have a pulse? You are reading THIS on the internet. It has saturated our very lives.

I have heard the internet described as still being like the Wild West. I believe that. We have a lot more of the time line in front of us than behind us. It is NOT too late to jump in. The future is obvious. People who don’t think that the internet will play a huge part of our everyday lives is living in a dream world and should probably go repair record players & analog watches.

So what is my recommendation to you?

I suggest that you consider what it is that you could learn to do to participate in this explosive growth on the internet. It really doesn’t matter WHAT you are interested in, there is another group of people on the internet interested in it too. From Aardvarks to paper wads you can find it on the internet.

Find your passion & talk about it, write about it, sell it, whatever.

You could become a graphics artist, copywriter, sell jewelry you make at home, or advertise your lawn mowing service, but do NOT underestimate what can be done in this information medium. You can learn these things part time while working a day job. That is what I did.

Sure I know you want to come home from your day job & watch “The Wheel of Fortune” on TV…DON’T DO IT! I don't care HOW many letters Vanna turned since 2005 but I am EVER so glad that I have become proficient at internet marketing. Otherwise I wouldn't have the CHOICE that I have today.

Your FUTURE is what you trade for this brain dead time. Where would I be if I had done that? I would be beating the streets looking for another day job. Don’t forget in today’s world the job for me didn’t end at 5PM either. Oh no….it often went until 10PM at night. So we are talking about a quality of life issue here. If I work until 10PM now I can visualize that new house I want. Whereas my day job hadn’t given me anything past a cost of living raise in YEARS!

Learn about internet marketing like I did. I happen to know a great website (mine!) to sort out the good from the bad. And people are ALWAYS amazed when I answer my emails personally. So if you get a question email me. Within limits I will try to answer your question. Hey I got a JOB to do now remember? But this website is dedicated to helping the newbie get confidence that they can do it too. I want to help them learn how.

Maybe this post is YOUR turning point in YOUR life. It’s your life. What will you do with it? What will you become? Believe me you can do it. Honestly, some of the people that I meet everyday that are getting wealthy on the internet are ……shall we say nothing special. They DECIDED to make it happen and that may be the ONLY thing that made them special. Don’t get me wrong. I am surrounded by brilliant people as well. In fact, brilliant people are drawn to the internet because they DO see the big picture. I’m just saying that you can’t use the excuse that “I can’t do it” or “I don’t know how”. That is just an excuse to make yourself feel better.

Haven’t you noticed over the years that people come to the United States from other countries, with no education, can barely speak English, with no skills and wind up being multi-millionaires? Now how is it that happens? What is the difference between them & everyone else? The difference is that they BELIEVED. They believed America is the land of opportunity…and they were right! But that land of opportunity is not just in America. It is WORLDWIDE on the internet. People in countries around the world can make (what used to be) an entire day’s wage in an hour on the internet.

As they say regardless of if you think you can do something or you think you can’t…you’re right!

PPS. You know what the best part of internet marketing is? FREEDOM! My drive to work consists of putting on the house shoes & trying not to step on the dog or the cat as I walk down the hall to go to work. Hell, I didn’t even change out of the house shoes all day!

The Dreaded Chipmunk Effect is Solved!

This story starts with our intrepid Internet Marketer who captures some streaming flash video as an SWF. I save it to my hard drive so that I can watch it when I want...especially if it is content I purchased & am afraid it will go away.

Move forward in time...

When I had to upgrade my flash player to V9.0.115.0 a week ago or so, I found that a lot of the recordings I had in SWF no longer sounded correct. They would take off with little bleeps & blurps (yes that's technical talk) with such annoying frequency that I couldn't stand it.

After pounding sand (Google) for awhile I came across the solution. It appears that Adobe introduced a little bug for us in the new player which screwed with our ability to play already existing flash files.

Anyway...ranting aside you can download a tool here that is truly a beautiful thing. It is from the creators of Camtasia (TechSmith) & creates an application that you merely drag a SWF file into it & push the FIX AUDIO button & voila it is fixed. The download is at the bottom of the page and is call SWFMP3fixer. The page explains all the technical reasons for the bug & why some SWFs have it & some don't.

Anyway...No more chipmunks! WooHooo!

I knew that some folks recommended a K-Lite codec pack download. That didn't help me unfortunately.

Sooooo... If you have a PC & haven't "upgraded" your flash V9 then you have something to look forward to. If you have a PC with an "upgraded" flash player this may be your answer to chipmunky (can I say that?) audios. If you have an Apple product I couldn't tell ya. Yer on yer own.

Anyway...hope this helps somebody else because it was reeeeeally starting to p*ss me off.

Internet Marketing Marathon is Over

Good grief! My wife & I just finished an Internet Marketing Marathon in Las Vegas. It started with PPC Classroom "LIVE". That was a huge event with numerous speakers that lasted two full days ending around 10PM on Saturday night with a secret session with Simon Leung of Google AdWords fame. We got a lot of insider info as the night went on.

Yesterday we capped it off with a small event led by Brent Hall (Multiplier Method) & Andre Chaperon. It was a very informal event with a workshop atmosphere where everyone got to ask questions until we couldn't think of any more to ask.

In both events we had numerous powerful internet marketers in the audience.

I will start to go over the presentations one post at a time so stay tuned. They will be coming as I get breaks in the day because we are still in vacation in Vegas for the 6 days.

So I will have limited time, but want you to get some of the bits & pieces we got from the seminars.

I will finish by saying that you really MUST attend events like this if you want to make it big in the internet marketing world. I will mention just ONE case in point at this time.

Amit Mehta is someone I met as Rich Schefren's event last year in October in Orlando. He was just another person in the crowd. He wasn't famous. He was...frankly nobody special at first glance. There were signs though. He had quit his $90K/yr job. He was making more online than his job. He was generous with info. I didn't get it. Over a year later I have now taken his Super Affiliate Accelerator course and now signed up for his 6 month coaching since he was the KEYNOTE speaker at the PPC Live event. His results were stunning. Let's just say that he showed us account info that was at $1.5 million & was only one of is accounts. OK, sure, he has to be a smart puppy, completing his PHD in theoretical physics & working at MIT Lincoln Labs.

The point is this...

You never know when the guy (or gal) you are sitting next to, will become a major part of your life. They may become your next JV partner, or you next best buddy. You may learn tricks that will save you thousands of dollars in Google costs or whatever. Or... GASP! You may just have fun.

Every time I go to an event like this, I don't care if they are "pitchfests" they have tremendous value. Look for an event that YOU can attend. It *could* make the difference that you have been looking for.

And before you say...OK Rex that is OK for YOU! You can afford to do all this & I can't. I will tell you a secret! I can't either! I just know that I can't afford NOT to.

I will have a HUGE announcement at the end of this year that will explain why.

Last October I went to a Seminar hosted by Rich Schefren. I have to say it was a life changing event for me. I was fed world class business information intraveniously. I got to meet with world class internet marketers, some of which I am now paying to teach me more.

If there is ONE THING that I can say has been the secret to my online success, it is that I seek out the best people on the internet to mentor me...to teach me what they do.

Rich is one such person. I can NOT believe just how much great information that I have extracted from him. Sure it cost a pretty penney. Any time you pick your butt up & fly across the country, stay in fancy hotels & eat out a lot you spend money.

Wealthy Affiliates Lookin' Good

Hi,

I joined Wealthy Affiliates, a membership site that has a HUGE forum where the Wealthy Affiliates Kyle & Carson answer your internet marketing questions as do people like Travis Sago, the "Bum Marketer". These folks seem to be excellent quality & the information in the members area is very good. There are videos as well as a 8 week action plan that step by step walks you through what to do. There a bunch of online tools as well. I unfortunately purchased many tools that do the same job for a ton of money. Not that I am complaining I love my tools, but they do provide some nice keyword & competition spying tools also in the members area.

I will be writing more about it as I have more time to learn about what all is inside, but so far we're looking good. At $29/month it is really hard to beat for the tremendous affiliate training you get.

Time Flies Again & Again

Good grief it has been a month aGAIN! This one was really busy.

I have been updating some of my websites like crazy. I helped Jason James with his launch of UNTOLD MARKETING SECRETS by providing reviews & testimonials. It really is a great product. Jason was a great guy through the whole thing too.

I purchased Harris Fellman's Peel Away Ads too. I found that to be a great product. He has already updated it to the second generation too. Inexpensively priced.

Then there was Harris Fellman's Site Stealer launch. It was interesting to watch as "Sal" had to do what the Don said so's he doesn't get wacked. A bit corny, but fun & the product value was high. Lot of lessons learned here. And a GREAT price too.

So I became a pretty big fan of Harris this month. Good value for low bux.

Sad story of the month is that I tried to hire someone to do an ebook cover for me because I know I should be outsourcing. That just didn't work. Although the fellow has been around for a while & had testimonials from here to there, I couldn't get a cover, a response...nada.

So I went & purchased CoverActionPro & will do a few for myself. All I have to do is make two of them to pay for it. Waddya know I CAN do eCovers, CDs, DVDs, Software boxes & more. Lots of free videos too.

Well that's about it for now. I better get back to work.

New Site Is Now Ready

Ok THAT took longer than it was supposed to. The holidays really can slow down the web page development.

I purchased rights to a couple of products you may want to investigate. Both of these were good enough that I wanted reseller rights to them.

One is Meeting With the Masters - $30K in 30 days. This is an AWESOME DVD. They got 13 of the internets TOP marketers in a room & surprised them with the task of coming up with a game plan so that your normal individual could generate $30K in 30 days. I don't know if it would work for you, but what I will say is that I have watched the DVD & found is absolutely PACKED with information. Much of it was ideas I had not heard before. Some of it was for sure. The fact is that this is super valuable information that you won't want to miss. I am in the middle of implementing many of there ideas myself.

MMR Moved to a New Hosting Account

I know it has been a long time since the blog got updated. Things just seem to fly by. I had to move a dozen websites from Catalog.com to Hostgator.com. I just couldn't handle Catalog.com any more. They don't allow cron jobs. They don't do Cpanel hosting...my favorite. They stop processes that take too much CPU bandwidth even if you only do it once a day. Their customer service wasted two weeks or more of my time by insisting they did not do this. Later, of course, they admitted they did after they were proven wrong.

I could go on & on.

Actually I think they have a very good system for newbies...I really do AND it is inexpensive. But this has become a business for me. Catalogs system is a very good way to get started & would probably work for any hobby sites or general fun sites. If you have a database to crunch on for a few minutes solid...you're toast though unless you get a host that doesn't shut off the CPU bandwidth.

I have so many new products to review & so many other things to tell everyone but it will have to wait for now.

Hang on a lot of new things are coming.

Updates should be coming more regularly though.

Make Money on Your Site with AdSense

I've been reading & implementing Joel Comm's 3rd edition of What Google Never Told You About Making Money with AdSense I have a number of websites that have quite a bit of AdSense on them. Joel has been helping me sort through all the possibilities. I am still working on my web sites to improve the AdSense based on his ideas. He shows numerous ways to make your Adsense ads blend in with the surroundings to help improve your click through rate & your earnings.

I certainly don't claim to be an expert but I found lots of ideas in this 3rd version of his ebook that individually will make the purchase worth the money. Actually I had his 2nd revision already & found it high enough in quality to decide to upgrade to the new version. I'm not sorry I did. This is a 199 page book packed with good info. Lot's of screen shots too.

Joel covers optimum placement on the page for AdSense ads as well as colors, backgrounds etc. Some of these ideas were common sense others were counterintuitive.

1Shoppingcart not without flaws

Well I am finding life is still not perfect in paradise. I have implemented the double opt-in with my shopping cart system. It gave me a go of it though. There are so many features in this software that setting up the autoresponders from the START is a big deal. Moving your database from one system to another has pitfalls. So far I've stepped into a few of them.

I put in 4 customer service tickets this weekend asking questions. Unfortunately the ticket system combined 3 of my tickets into 1 so things got confusing, so I simply called them. I was on the phone with a real live person in about 5 seconds. WOW! He was courteous & able to answer all of my questions except one that one of the other tech support people was working on.

All the big boys seem to use this system, but I found several chinks in the armor within 24 hours of setting up shop. I think I have a work-around for everything so far even though I didn't like the original answer. But best I can tell this system is the best out there. I am open to anyone else who know of a better one, but I know many of the biggies who use this or Salesautomator which is just Frank Kern's reselling of 1shopping cart. So it is the same thing. So is Marketer's Choice. It's still just 1shopping cart.

Well that's about it for today. I am determined to keep this up better than the past.

So I'm sure by now you've figured out that you will probably hear more stories about the transition to 1shoppingcart. Hey so far I am still a fan. The Double Opt-in is NOW WORKING (I think)

Hello everyone,

I am starting to get the hang of the 1shoppingcart.com dashboard. I think I have the double opt-in process now working. I got the main drop box working last night & realized I forgot the banner across the bottom of each page. I got that working this morning.

Soon I will redo the video for the one time offer to not have it autoplay. I want to give the person the option to watch it or not. Also if someone has dial up (God help them) then the system probably locks up while they are waiting for the video to load.

I also want to redo the one-time offer screen to make it more obvious that it is a one-time offer. I think some people just blow on by the video to get to the freebie without thinking.

My New Shopping Cart & Autoresponder

Hello everyone,

Big updates are coming here at megamarketingreviews. I have signed up with 1shoppingcart.com and will be over time adding their many capabilities to my website. I needed to step up to a more professional system for some time as my customer list grows.

Today I am working on newsletter signups. Shortly I will have their autoresponder & broadcast service in place for newsletter signups and newsletter delivery. Unfortunately this MAY require me to TOTALLY update my database.

So the downside is that everyone MAY have to opt-in again. If that is required I won't make you go through that without some bonus for your trouble!
